Akron superintendent to drop 'Orientals' nickname
AKRON, Ohio — An Ohio school superintendent says he is updating the district’s anti-discrimination policy to drop the “Orientals” nickname for sports teams. Akron Superintendent David James said East High School will have a new name for its teams when a newly renovated building opens next fall. James is changing the district’s anti-discrimination policy to prohibit the use of any name or symbol that stereotypes groups based on sex, race, ancestry or national origin or that could create a racially hostile or discriminatory environment. The school has used a dragon mascot on football helmets.
oh ok. This was still a team name? I guess still having the Indians is a great example for NE Ohio in general. Note that this is Akron East High School. Classy, Akron.

It’s unbelievable to me that everyone continues to watch football when we know that men are getting genuinely, permanently, brain damaged. The game is tantamount to cockfighting, only with people instead of animals.

I have been wondering a lot about this myself lately. I keep asking Ryan (while he is watching football, obv) whether or not tons of people are getting killed/maimed/permanently injured playing this every year. Why is this an acceptable entertainment activity>
I hate that athletic talent is valued more in this society than women’s bodily integrity, therapeutic healing from violent crimes for both the perpetrator and the victim, or sexual assault prevention.
Athletes seem to be a highly visible embodiment of the transhuman or posthuman, making such issues more tangible than Blade Runner or Commander Data could.
