I have been reading/devouring this book over the last couple of days (it very quickly superseded Birth of the Clinic as my book of choice to read at work). I am so crazy about Philippe Bourgois, and after a year that was fairly discouraging, he is reminding me why I loved anthropology in the first place. I really appreciate the extensive inclusion of transcription as opposed to just conclusions of the anthropologist. Its giving me a lot to think about in terms of ethics and cultural relativism in the field.So, its pretty cool.

Public access books on medical anthropology

The UC system’s California Digital Library has an extensive collection of electronic monographs (about 2000); while most of these are “open access” only to people in the UC system, about 500—mainly UC Press titles—are available in their entirety to the public. These include a number of books which may be of interest to our readers.

Jesus fucking Christ. Are you reading Atlas Shrugged? Don’t you know it’ll turn you into an asshole for at least two years? When you’re college-age and your parents are paying for everything, you’re likely to be a big believer in people pulling themselves up by their bootstraps. Ayn Rand appeals to your age group for that reason, but the problem is, once you actually have to pay your own way, bootstrap-pulling gets a whole fuck of a lot harder, and Rand sounds more and more like a creepy Republican. If you’re over 25 and you still think her books are great, you’re (a) white and (b) an asshole.
