When we stop hoping that capitalism—a system that is overtly based on greed— can somehow be reformed to benefit the working class, we are no longer limited to thinking purely in terms of reform. When we stop trusting the saccharine myth that the sanctioned paths for achieving such reforms in our divinely-inspired constitution were ever intended to be successful, we can start thinking beyond the boundaries of legally-sanctioned remedies (i.e., voting for a political savior, peaceful protests, boycotts, candlelight vigils, etc). Once hope and trust are dead, we have the potential to be effective.

Many of the people who think Obama’s teleprompter use is an issue don’t believe Obama is who he claims to be. For whatever reason, they think that it’s more likely that Obama is an actor in the employ of some nefarious global corporation than that he’s an immensely talented and intelligent man (who happens to both disagree with them on a few issues and be the President of the United States). In their world, Obama’s popular support comes from gullible people believe he’s actually a real person. And since Obama is at the front of this shadowy conspiracy, there’s much more at stake than a slight increase in the top marginal tax rate. Nobody forms a shadowy conspiracy for something that insignificant. There must be something really nefarious coming.

Obama’s condemnation of “original sin” begets the white Christian nation’s perpetual forgiveness and redemption, but also anticipates the pessimism of those who would rightfully allege that white supremacy’s visceral structures of dominance are endemic to American national reproduction. This attempts to erase the indelible: the social and economic system that rests on the subjection of Africans as racial chattel is not a compartmentalized or reconcilable event in the American white racial destiny, but is the foundation of what legal scholar Cheryl Harris has called the ongoing legal consolidation of whiteness as property, a consolidation that can only occur at the expense of those who are dispossessed and/or actually owned by the white nation.
