I’m from Lansing, MI & currently live in Cleveland, OH. This is just a collection of things I think are neat.A general overview of ‘things I think are neat’:abandonment/the post-industrial midwest, anarchism (syndicalism, insurrectionalism, etc), race/ethnicity (esp. defining/constructing the boundaries of whiteness), gender, class (talking/thinking about class generally seems to be an underrated activity), health care (access to, the experience of obtaining, etc), art, science fiction, punk music, conservative talk radio and anthropology (which probably incorporates almost everything else about people).

WEST SIXTH TODAY, EAST FOURTH TOMORROW…OHIO CITY AND COVENTRY THE DAY AFTER THAT.
Where does it end? Lakewood? Shaker? The thin blue line is all that is stopping this from happening, but it’s probably too late. Cleveland…the domino theory at work.”

-
grizzster commening on Reported beating of a Morehouse graduate by off-duty officer adds to controversy in Cleveland’s Warehouse District

Seriously, (almost) every single comment on this article is intensely racist. Thank god the plain dealer comments are here to make sure everyone knows that Cleveland is serious about keeping black people in their place (as the commenter says, keeping them from ‘ruining’ certain neighborhoods) and cracking down on black troublemakers BAMN.

from the original article:

The men said they had gone out that night with white co-workers from a downtown bank, members of the same executive training program. The two were in the lobby near the door, preparing to leave, when a security guard pointedly told them it was time to go.

Ruiz, who recently moved here from Charlotte, N.C., said they responded that they were waiting for friends to come down from upstairs. He said the security guard shoved them out the door and onto the sidewalk.

Ruiz said that when he objected, another security guard grabbed him and slammed him onto the roof of a parked car and began punching him.

The street was busy with people and police, and Ruiz said he assumed police would come to his aid. Soon, he said, he realized he was dealing with a police officer.

In a police report, Officer Anthony J. Sauto said he was working off-duty and in plain clothes for Velvet Dog when he saw Ruiz and Parilla refusing to leave and he intervened. He said Ruiz became “verbally and physically aggressive,” then resisted arrest and tried to hit him.

I hear a lot of people from the northern part of the United States talk about how racist the southern part of this country is, but honestly I am not sure I have been anywhere in this country where serious racism and open/outward support of segregation is more a part of public/private discussion than cleveland. And I know you obviously can’t judge a whole city by the people who comment on newspaper webpages, but its a bizarrely frequent part of normal conversation.

Ohio has a complicated white supremacist history, and it seems like we might fare better in the future if we really seriously got down to business and dealt with our white supremacist present.

These Machines kill Facists [via]

These Machines kill Facists [via]

Cats are free to good homes today and Saturday at the Cleveland APL; 560 cats and kittens need homes

Cats are free to good homes today and Saturday at the Cleveland APL; 560 cats and kittens need homes:
The Cleveland Animal Protective League’s shelter is full of cats and kittens, so the nonprofit group is offering cats for free.
There will be no adoption fee Friday and Saturday at 1729 Willey Ave. in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood. Conversely, they avoid some fields, like surgical subspecialties and anesthesiology.

This is a really interesting idea. I think that there are several things (including the intense focus on the natural sciences and reification of ‘science’—as an ultimate source of all truth and logic devoid of cultural or moral influence—w/o much focus on the philosophy/history of science) about med school pedagogy that do not produce very thoughtful doctors. but, i wonder if thoughtful doctors are really the doctors that biomedicine requires.

also i hate the term ‘hard sciences’ because of the implication of ‘soft sciences.’ generally i use ‘natural sciences’ versus ‘social(/behavioral) sciences,’ but that implies a dichotomy between the natural and the social as though they don’t include each other. so i give up.

4 Humours [via]

4 Humours [via]

"This hospital has a c-section rate that is well above what the World Health Organization deems a..."

“This hospital has a c-section rate that is well above what the World Health Organization deems a safe c-section rate; if women are consenting to a c-section right off the bat (not to mention fetal heart-rate monitoring, antibiotics, episiotomies, and epidurals!) regardless of whether one is actually medically indicated, it’s certainly blurring the lines between what’s medically necessary and the power of suggestion from a medical “authority.” Where does an individual’s right to make an informed choice begin and hospital legal policy end?”

- Does Refusing a C-Section = Child Abuse? [via]

“You’re so Pretty!” by the Matadors of Shame
Last spring, I bought my first car. Because I had walked and bused everywhere but I didn’t formally exercise, I assumed I would gain weight rapidly upon switching to car transportation. Not so—I lost about 15 pounds really quickly. Before long, I had to buy new pants. I still wasn’t exercising, but being able to reach beyond the North City food desert for food access caused me to lose weight without trying. Scary.
I live in Detroit now. Food access is varied here. There are no major chain big box groceries inside the city, but we have a number of medium box stores ranging from horrible to good, as well as a number of smaller ethnic and specialty stores. We also have one of the largest, oldest farmer’s markets in the country, where at 2am I watched friends buy bushels of beautiful raspberry-red heirloom tomatoes for canning. It really runs the gamut. I say Detroit is not a food desert, but in the likely event that my very broken car quits in the next month or two…. Ask me what I think about Detroit food access then. And then help me look for my old, bigger pants.”

- rustbelt commenting on The Hierarchy Of Food Needs

it bothers me how few people are listening to the matadors of...

it bothers me how few people are listening to the matadors of shame. i mean, i might listen to them too much, but people are spend a lot of time listening to lessor pop punk bands.

But Alexander’s observations of addicts at the clinic where he worked in Vancouver suggested powerfully to him that the root cause of addiction was not so much the pharmacology of these particular drugs as the environmental stressors with which his addicts were trying to cope.
To test his hunch he designed Rat Park, an alternative laboratory environment constructed around the need of the subjects rather than the experimenters. A colony of rats, who are naturally gregarious, were allowed to roam together in a large vivarium enriched with wheels, balls and other playthings, on a deep bed of aromatic cedar shavings and with plenty of space for breeding and private interactions. Pleasant woodland vistas were even painted on the surrounding walls. In this situation, the rats’ responses to drugs such as opiates were transformed. They no longer showed interest in pressing levers for rewards of morphine: even if forcibly addicted, they would suffer withdrawals rather than maintaining their dependence. Even a sugar solution could not tempt them to the morphine water (though they would choose this if naloxone was added to block the opiate effects). It seemed that the standard experiments were measuring not the addictiveness of opiates but the cruelty of the stresses inflicted on lab rats caged in solitary confinement, shaved, catheterised and with probes inserted into their median forebrain bundles.”

- The globalisation of addiction
