The City Where the Sirens Never Sleep

It happens, though, when you’re from Detroit. In the popular imagination, the Motor City has gone from being the Arsenal of Democracy, so named for their converting auto factories to make the weapons which helped us win World War II, and the incubator of the middle class (now leading the nation in foreclosure rates, Detroit once had the highest rate of home ownership in the country), to being Dysfunction Junction. To Detroit’s credit, they’ve earned it. [via]

anthropophagous

I'm an 24 year old woman who works in various aspects of biomedical research, and is currently a grad student in Medical Anthropology & Public Health. I'm from Lansing, MI & currently live in Cleveland, OH. This is just a collection of things I think are neat.

A general overview of 'things I think are neat':abandonment/the post-industrial midwest, anarchism (syndicalism, insurrectionalism, etc), race/ethnicity (esp. defining/constructing the boundaries of whiteness), gender, class (talking/thinking about class generally seems to be an underrated activity), health care (access to, the experience of obtaining, etc), art, science fiction, punk music, conservative talk radio and anthropology (which probably incorporates almost everything else about people).
